OIL INDUSTRY CONVERSIONS

Crude petroleum, and the refined products made from crude oil, are normally measured either by volume in gallons and US barrels, or by weight in tons or tonnes. The relationship between volume and weight is usually measured by density in the United Kingdom (the alternative measure is relative density or specific gravity). American oilmen usually reckon quantities of oil produced, moved or processed in barrels per day (bpd or b/d). The loose but simple rule of thumb for conversion is that a barrel a day is roughly 50 tonnes a year, but the relationship varies according to density and so according to product.

CONVERSION FACTORS FOR OIL

Gallons, Metric Tons , and Barrels

For example:

1 Barrel (BBL) of petroleum or related products = 42 gallons
1 Barrel (BBL) Thousand cubicmeters (TCM) 0.0001590
1 Barrel (BBL) 0.1364 metric tons (MT)
1 Gallon = 124,000 Btu (rounded to nearest 1000)
1 Metric Ton = 10.364 Barrels

BTU Content of Common Energy Units

1 barrel (42 gallons) of crude oil = 5,800,000 Btu
1 gallon of gasoline = 124,000 Btu
1 gallon of diesel fuel = 139,000 Btu
1 gallon of heating oil = 139,000 Btu
1 barrel of residual fuel oil = 6,287,000 Btu
1 cubic foot of natural gas = 1,031 Btu
1 gallon of propane = 91,000 Btu
1 short ton of coal = 20,754,000 Btu
1 kilowatthour of electricity = 3,412 Btu
1 kilowatthour of electricity = 3,412 Btu
